  • How’s your lift?

19 December, Saturday; Pemba Island, Tanzania. Fundu Lagoon is very coupley.  This is not surprising.  Nearly everything I’ve read about the place talks about honeymooners and the place was most definitely filled with honeymooners when we visited.  All of the tables are always set for two and it was a little bit disappointing that they didn’t encourage communal dining, but hey – honeymooners obviously want to croon into each others eyes and be all dopey-talking.  I felt that Ben and I kept our dopey-ness to a minimum since we’ve been married for 6 months already --- not less than 6 days like most of the other couples. The owner of the resort was in residence while we were there and invited everyone to her bungalow one evening for a birthday party.  It was nice to chat with everyone and this encouraged more hello’s and how-was-your-day conversations during our stay.  It was a very European crowd – a Dutch couple, a French couple, a few English couples and one American/Australian couple that Ben chatted with a lot.  They were also staying in a room with a pool and we discussed the virtues of a private pool with them on our last evening.  All of the sudden, a song from Dirty Dancing comes on the speakers and the American girl leans over with a spry smile and says, “I just have to ask.  How’s your lift?”  We giggled and said, “Just OK.”  Seems we’re not the only silly couple on the island.  If you don’t get it, go ask a girl who’s about 30 years old.  She’ll tell you what it means.
