3 December, Friday; Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda.
After settling in at our camp on Hippo Hill, we drove through Queen Elizabeth National Park and encountered a large herd of elephants, which are magnificent creatures.
Then we took a 2 hour cruise on the Kazinga Channel, where we were blessed with sightings of water bucks, buffalo, TONS of hippos, alligators, monitor lizards, fish eagles, kingfishers, various cranes and other birds.
Other than seeing tons of hippos, one of the highlights was a calf that had just been born today. It was so cute to see the calf try to stand, wobbling, only to fall down, but get back up again.
Right now, I’m sitting in the bar writing this blog and we can hear hippo noises out in the darkness. If you don’t hear any more from me after this blog, I’ve been attacked by a hippo on Hippo Hill. I guess you could then really call them Hungry, Hungry Hippos.
Our spot for the night
The boat ride was a great opportunity for Ben to take photos and I was surprised to find out he only took about 350. We talked at length before the trip about camera equipment that we were bringing. I say
we
instead of Ben because I was tasked with carrying some of the equipment in my carryon luggage. Ben felt a bit relieved that there is another passenger on our trip that also is an avid photographer and also brought along two DSLRs, 3 lenses and a point and shoot camera. So Ben wasn’t so crazy after all.
