Ireland vs USA Rugby Game

After my introduction to rugby during the 2008 World Cup, I’d been waiting for an opportunity to see the game in person. The Ireland team was visiting the US for a friendly competition game against the US in Santa Clara this past weekend, so we schlepped down to the South Bay. Ben immediately commented that it was not a proper rugby game since you’d never get such amazing, sunny, warm weather for a rugby game in England. I preferred the hot sun to the cold rain, though.
Ben spent half the time explaining the game to me (and I still don’t really get it!) and the other half snapping photos. My favorite part of the game occurred during the first half. The players emerged from a scrum and there was a piece of white cloth floating around on the pitch. As more of the players climbed off each other, one of the American players stepped out with only half a pair of shorts. The crowd roared in laughter. Someone brought him a new pair of shorts and he proceeded to change right there on the field.
Photos by Ben of course!
